I think the whole SQUAD/TEAM thing is being lost in translation here.

Gerrard is our best overall player, I think everybody would agree. He must play every big(gish) game.

If Benitez feels that a tad more protection is needed for the back four - Stevie plays right side, if not Stevie plays central.

Stevie is what he is - a class player who will provide limited protection for the players behind, if he does what he does best.

      Why?

      LIVERPOOL Vs ENGLAND....

      ENGLAND first

All England managers feel the need to play Stevie & Lamps centre mid. This rarely works because both of their instincts are to attack. Stevie is made 'stay back', then everyone says (with teary eyes) "why can't he do what he does for Liverpool?". Easy - Lampard CANNOT give him the cover he has at club level to attack. Solution - Play Gerrard on the right, Hargreaves/DGAF (I'm Irish!) along side Lampard.

      LIVERPOOL:-

Anyone outside the top four, with the possible exception of Spurs, Everton, Bolton or Blackburn, Gerrard should play CM. But if/when you do, you must lose a certain amount at the back. Quick counters with Stevie having just hit the post up front & Riise holding his hand & Finnan taking his picture from the far side? That leaves Agger, Carra, Reina & Alonso to stop a 'blitzkrieg' on our goal. Only one has pace.

      FINAL THOUGHT....

For me, to effectively play Stevie against top opposition, we must drop a striker, or play a 98% effective Stevie and gain the goal threat..

      Only my thoughts BTW!

        Good post mate
To be honest, there is not much more I can add, that hasnt already been mentioned in this thread.
What really gets up my nose is the likes of Andy Gray, totally refusing to understand why Rafa may sometimes play Stevie in anohter position apart from central midfield, and then telling anyone who will listen that Rafa is wrong. Just annoying, to see one or some of the so called top pundits going on like this.
Gerrard will never get the midfield protection he deserves for England, he will get it at Liverpool though.
I back Rafa with whatever way he wants to play Stevie, he is a top class manager and should be qualified enough to decide what is best for the team, in a one match situation, I don't think there is a better manager than Rafa in world football.
Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'

"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.

        * After Tommy Lawrence had let in a fluke goal between his legs

Is this not an old interview? I'm sure I read those comments from him towards the end of last season.
